The Flag of Russia
The current flag of Russia consists of thirds of white (the upper third), blue (the middle third) and red (the lower third). It was officially adopted in 1991, after the Soviet Union (USSR). Since Russia was the largest state of the former Soviet Union and therefore inherited the seat in the United Nations. Prior to th3 1600’s, Russia had no official flag. Flags were flown for use in military and shipping reasons. The exact inspiration or origin of the flag and it’s colors are unknown. Speculation exists widely that there was some Dutch influence upon the flag. The red, white and blue colors became colors on Russian merchant ships, but it was not until around 1896 (under Tsar Nicholas II) that this flag became the official flag of Russia. After the October Revolution, in 1917, the favored Russian flag was actually the more dramatic red flag with the yellow hammer and sickle.
The communist red flag with the hammer and sickle was supposed to represent the unity of industrial and agricultural classes. In 1922, this flag (and the symbol emblazoned upon it) became the official symbol for the USSR. The hammer and sickle symbol continues in use today as the official sign of the Communist Party.
